Has anyone ever read anything of Susan Cooper's? I have read "Over Sea, Under Stone" and "The Dark is Rising". This Topic is for rambling about her movies and books!

I heard about the movie of The Dark Is Rising and I heard that it was way off from the book. How's the book?

Glorious! One scary part was written so well, I actually got goosebumps! That's never happened before. It's worth a reading, in my opinion. "Over Sea, Under Stone" is the slow-started prequel; I read it to my critical younger siblings, and they loved it! I don't know about the third book in the Dark is Rising Sequence...I got it from the library today. It's called Greenwitch. Here's hoping!

The Dark is Rising is on my reading list; I've heard that it's quite good (and that the movie was horrid).
The only book I've read by her is Victory. Half of it was written in the present tense, something I cannot abide (:P) but the other half I liked very much.

Why are so many people saying The Dark is Rising movie was bad! I liked it. It did have a few things that I probably would have changed, but it's on my growing list of fav. movies. Pretty soon I'm gonna start the thrid in the series, "Greenwitch." I've been hesitant because of the name, but decided to try it.
Sidenote: The cimematography in the Dark is Rising was very wacko; they even had some upside-down shots, so the movie left you feeling kinda dizzy. Woulda been a good 'un ta see in the theater, but I didn't know back then if it was witchy-poo or not. We rented it before we got it.Posted 3 years ago # -
Pip here again; Greenwitch was fine, leaving me feeling wild as a usual emotion after reading one of her books! The descriptions are vivid and loverly, the characters are neat-o, so I liked it enough to plan on getting the last two in the series from the library.
Bad things: God's name is used questionably twice, and the Greenwitch is a ceremony for women in...Wales, I think, where they build a big "offering" to the elemental queen of the sea and after making wishes on it, cast it into the waves. The offering is portrayed as real and talks to the children, and is supposedly part of the Wild Magic, a sect different form the Light (the good guys), the Dark (the baddies) and men. If I were rating this, I'd give it four stars.Posted 3 years ago # -
Hrm...weird.
I bought The Dark is Rising today (didn't know that it was the second book; do you have to read them in order?). Haven't read much yet, but it looks very good. Hooray for authors brave enough to write about large families!

It makes better sense if you do read them in order...but since you a'r'dy got the book, I'd advise you just not to move on to book #3 until you've read the first. The first one is kinda like a prequel to the series.
*laughs at comment about brave writers*
I sometimes write about large families, but in my main novel I have an army that kept growing...and growing...and growing!!!!! By the end of the book, I had (and had kept track of!) around 50 characters.Posted 3 years ago # -
Haha...yeah, I don't think anyone is brave enough to have a family that large.
Very well then! The title be somewhat problematic--like The Witch of Blackbird Pond was
We shall see.

I just finished reading one of her contemporary works, called King of Shadows; I didn't like it nearly as much as her fantasy things!
